It's got a few hacks in it they others may find interesting. Note that I use Mark Williams C. The code is probably not directly portable as it depends on the order in which parameters are passed. You'll need to check on such things before using any other compiler, but you should have no trouble. >This programmers add-on does not require RegentBase? You can create tables and do queries, including the various types of joins. SELECTs which return multiple rows do not behave in the usual manner. Like you said, don't expect much. But for $25, it's a good hack. -- Ron DeBlock N2JSO ...!rutgers!galaxy!argus ron@wilbur.njit.edu ------------------------------ Date: 12 Oct 89 13:12:30 GMT From: att!dptg!lzaz!hcj@ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU (HC Johnson) Subject: Disk Speedup In article <1725@atari.UUCP>, jansen@atari.UUCP (Mark O. To test it I filled up by copying my 16 meg C: partition to it twice. The setup is source C: on drive 1 (SCSI 0) and destination G: on drive 2 ( SCSI 1). After 16-20 meg of copying, it gets noticeably SLOW! I suspect this is a consequence of clusters being allocated 1 at a time and the FAT bewritten after each allocation. Oh well, its nice to know that TOS1.4 will support 32 MEG. Its just not time effective to make partitions that large when one can easily put 12 partitions on a disk. Howard C. Subject: Draft Graphics printing in WORDUP I use WordUp for wordprocessing and I like it a lot. I have a wonderfull matrix printer which can print at 360*360 dpi(NEC-emulation), emulate IBM ProPrinter, NEC P-series and Epson LQ-series. It is Citizen Swift 24. I must say that I am still impressed by the crispness of the output but it ain't no speed demon with 360*360 dpi. Waiting almost 20 minutes for a single page isn't very practical for drafts (not for ribbon either). As all WordUp users know draft graphic printing isn't reality (except for Deskjet). Well, I thougth, I have Epson LQ emulation so why not make different assign.sys files for NEC-emulation and Epson LQ-emulation. I just installed WordUp twice with different printers and now I have two different GDOS.SYS-files (one is GDOS.NEC the other one GDOS.LQ, you have to rename them yourself). With G+Plus accesory I made also two Assign.ins-files (WUP_NEC.INS and WUP_LQ.INS). Now when ever I start wordprocessing I use Epson LQ for drafts (if you want to call 180*180 dpi draft <-) and when I am happy with my work, I quit WordUp, change INS-file to WUP_NEC.INS with G+Plus and start WordUp again. Then I tell Swift to emulate NEC and start printing. Result : 360*360 dpi document. I also tried using Epson FX-emulation (under Epson LQ-emulation), but it doesn't work properly ( the hight of the text and graphics increases by factor 1.2 (about) ). But under IBM-emulation it works. Now I have also a 120*144 dpi draft. Like ST, Swift can emulate almost everything. So if you have a printer which can emulate a less-dpi printer (and have a GDOS-driver) give it a try. Think of it, I saved 112680 Dots Per Square Inch (from 129600 down to 16920). This should work for other GDOS-programs too. While I am here, is there a update for G+Plus after V1.3, Rel. That much has already been said by Atari. Interesting enough, TOS 1.6 is also supposed to be the version going into the TT/P. The PC-Speed board I mentioned contains a v30 chip and I saw a socket which I believe is for a co-processor. I am not sure of the clock speed. It runs CGA graphics and emulates the Hercules in mono mode. I was told that the screen display on a mono Atari monitor is extremely impressive. Far better than the standard Atari screen which is already crisp. As I get more details I will post them on the net. This has us wondering about the the possibilities for a RAM upgrade, perhaps to 2.5 MBytes. The prices which we have seen for such an upgrade vary by quite a bit, being between $305 and over $400 (US). So, now a list: A) Is such a RAM upgrade desirable? Our Atari serves both for games and desktop publishing. The utilities/accessories might be expected to occupy up to 0.25 MBytes. B) What is the difference between the solderless and conventional upgrades? Is a solderless upgrade merely a DRAM swap? C) What about the extra heat generated by all those RAM's in such a small (ST) box? Is it substantially greater than for the standard 1 MB? D) Do you have any recommended places for us to consider having such an upgrade performed? Do they perform an infant mortality test? Since this is probably a frequently recurring question, a mail reply might be best. Thank you for your comments to these questions and the general issue of memory upgrade for the ST. And lastly, the Turbo16 from FAST TECHNOLOGY, along with the TOS 1.4. And everything works fine. I haven't run into any problems either attributable to the T16 or to TOS 1.4. And I have 3 local friends who has TOS 1.4 with T16, and none of them are having any problems. I haven't formatted my drive since I bought it a year ago. Heck, even Calamus works with the T16!!! Sorry that I can't help you Peter. I just wanted to let you know that others don't appear to be having that problem. Did you check your installation?? Oh one thing. It is a known fact that the 74LS373 need to be replaced with 74AS373, as the AS version has twice the current drive of the older LS chips. Maybe you should try that?? My dealer does that replacement as part of his standard installation of TOS 1.4 and the T16. Give it a shot. Let the net know of your results.
